Eino Leino ei milloinkaan tahtonut pysähtyä, olla valmis, alistua aisoihin. Hän tahtoi aina laajentua, suurentua, luoda uutta ja uudistua.

Sanat ovat L. Onervan, joka määritteli Leinon aseman kahden elämänkatsomukseltaan erilaisen leirin taistelussa. Laajakatseisen humanismin ja vapaan ajattelun rintamassa Leino hyökkäsi auktoriteettiuskon ja vanhoillisuuden linnoitusta vastaan. Nämä kaksi rintamaa ovat hellittämättömästi, leppymättömästi vastakkain vielä tänä päivänä niin Suomessa kuin muuallakin maailmassa, Onerva kirjoitti.

Eino Leinon seuran asettama toimituskunta on Onervan ajatuksen innoittamana koonnut epätavallisen juhlakirjan. Se näyttää, että Eino Leinon perinne on jatkunut itsenäisyyden eri vaiheissa 1930-luvulta tälle vuosikymmenelle.

Kaksi Leinon suurta ohjelmakirjoitusta on valikoiman lähtökohtana. Jatkoksi teos nostaa esiin 47 kuuluisaa mutta lehtien vuosikertoihin unohtunutta esseetä, kiistakirjoitusta ja pakinaa. Niillä on ajankohtainen leinolainen viesti.

Kirjoittajien joukossa on kaksitoista Eino Leinon palkinnon saajaa Raoul Palmgrenista Paavo Haavikkoon, Hagar Olssonista Arvo Saloon, Arvo Turtiaisesta Henrik Tikkaseen. Valikoima kertoo Leinon hengen vaiheista samoin kuin tekijöidensä intohimosta yksilölliseen sanankäyttöön, itsenäisiin valintoihin.
