Ricky Roma (Al Pacino), Shelley Levene (Jack Lemmon), George Aaronow (Alan Arkin) en Dave Moss (Ed Harris) zijn verkopers bij een makelaarskantoor in onroerend goed. Niets gaat hen te ver in hun werk, want de topverkoper krijgt van het bedrijf een Cadillac, terwijl de slechtsten worden ontslagen. Afgunst, haat, agressie en wantrouwen maken zich meester van het kantoor. Dave en George smeden een plan om de adressen van de beste klanten in handen te krijgen. Wanneer blijkt dat er ingebroken is in het kantoor en de adressen zijn gestolen, krijgt een detective de opdracht om uit te zoeken wie de schuldige is. De spanning stijgt ten top wanneer Roma's grootste klant zijn deal ongedaan wil maken. De vier verkopers zetten alle zeilen bij om de klant hiervan te weerhouden. De situatie komt tot een climax wanneer iemand dit verpest en daarnaast bekend wordt wie de dief is.
